Memorial Website for Gen Matsumoto
This memorial website sincerely established for Gen Matsumoto, who passed away on March 9th, 2003, celebrates his life dedicated to the valuable research activities. This would be a central location for all who love and miss him to come together to remember him.
Born in Ohta-ku, Tokyo on November 24th, 1940, as the eldest son of Mr.
and Mrs. Ikugoro Matsumoto, he has been brought up in Tokyo except for
the evacuation to Tatebayashi-shi, Gumma during the World WarⅡ. He underwent
an operation for tuberculosis at seventeen years of age, however he overcame
it and studied so hard with indomitable mind that he was admitted to the
Faculty of Science, Tokyo University and majored in Physics. After continuing
his study as an assistant at the university, he got a position at Electrotechnical
Laboratory, Agency of Industrial Science and Technology, Ministry of International
Trade and Industry. He was engaged in the research task on providing the
physical comprehension with life phenomena, and particularly he got a globally
prominent result in the research on squid giant axon. Furthermore he took
a new turn to the study for creating the computer operated by the principle
of brain. He also made a great effort to establish the Brain Science Institute
in RIKEN, and have been playing an active part as one of the Group Directors
of this institute.
He has got out of shape since January 2003, took a sudden turn for the
worse on March 7th, and left this world on 2:38 a.m. March 9th in the cause
of the Fulminant Bacterial Peritonitis.
He was decorated the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold Rays with Neck
Ribbon from the Japanese Government. (3/9 2003)
